Illinois Unclaimed Property Program Returns $22 Million to Residents in January 2025

Illinois State Treasurer Michael Frerichs announced that over $22 million was returned to nearly 19,000 residents in January 2025 through I-CASH, the state’s Unclaimed Property Program.
What Is I-CASH?
The I-CASH program collects uncashed rebate checks, unpaid life insurance claims, forgotten bank accounts, and safe deposit box contents from companies and banks after a period of dormancy.

The Illinois Treasurer’s Office is legally required to hold onto unclaimed money and property until it is returned to its rightful owner or heirs.
Record-Breaking National Unclaimed Property Day
During National Unclaimed Property Day, from Jan. 27 to Feb. 2, the Treasurer’s Office saw a record-breaking 38,389 claims initiated—more than triple the usual weekly average of 11,000 claims.
I-CASH’s Success

Nearly $300 million returned to 330,000 claimants last year.

New I-CASH website features include a Spanish-language option and the ability to send potential unclaimed property alerts to family and friends.

The Enhanced Money Match program now automatically returns money to residents without requiring them to file a claim.

Illinois residents are encouraged to check the I-CASH website multiple times a year to see if they have unclaimed funds waiting for them.
