Valley Residents May Be Owed Part of $125 Million in Unclaimed Texas Funds

More than $125 million in unclaimed money belongs to Rio Grande Valley residents, according to the Texas Comptroller’s Office.

The funds come from dormant bank accounts, uncashed checks, utility deposits, insurance payouts, refunds, and royalty checks that were turned over to the state after years of inactivity.

Officials say the Valley has one of the highest amounts of unclaimed property in Texas but one of the lowest claim rates, often due to address changes, closed businesses, or paperwork errors.

The state is now encouraging residents to check if money is owed to them.

Searching is free and takes less than a minute at ClaimItTexas.gov. No account is required.

If money is found, claims can be filed online and are usually processed within a few weeks.

Who May Be Eligible to Claim Unclaimed Texas Funds

You may have unclaimed property if you:

  • Lived or worked in Texas in the past

  • Moved or changed addresses without updating records

  • Had a closed or inactive bank account

  • Were owed a refund, insurance payout, or utility deposit

  • Owned or worked for a business that closed

  • Are an heir or beneficiary of a deceased relative

Texas holds unclaimed money indefinitely until the rightful owner files a claim.
