Surprise $250 Checks? Some Americans Are Getting Free Money Without Applying

With inflation driving up prices and tariffs affecting the cost of everyday goods, some Americans are getting a welcome surprise: free money in the form of checks up to $250, and they didn’t even apply for it.
Thousands of people in New York have recently received these checks thanks to a state program aimed at returning unclaimed money to its rightful owners.

What Is This $250 Check About?
This isn’t a new stimulus payment or tax refund.
The money comes from unclaimed funds, things like forgotten bank accounts, unused gift card balances, old security deposits, or uncashed paychecks.
Over time, this money is turned over to the state, where it sits until claimed.

Right now, New York State holds over $13 billion in unclaimed money, and officials are making an effort to return some of it automatically — no paperwork required.
Why Are People Getting This Free Money Now?
Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli’s office launched a new effort to return unclaimed funds directly to residents.
The timing couldn’t be better. With inflation still impacting groceries, gas, and utilities, and tariff costs pushing up prices on imported goods, even a small check can help.

Do I Need to Do Anything to Get the Money?
No. The best part of this initiative is that it’s automatic.
If the state can confirm your identity and match you to the funds, they’ll mail a check without you needing to take any action.
However, if you haven’t received a check, you can still search for unclaimed funds in your name on the official New York State Comptroller’s website. You might be owed more than $250.
How to Check for Unclaimed Funds
Visit the official New York State Comptroller’s website and use the unclaimed money search tool.
Just type in your name to see if the state owes you money. If it does, you can file a claim and receive your free money by mail.
