Surprise Checks Up to $500? Pennsylvania Is Sending Out Money You Might Not Know About

Thousands of Pennsylvania residents are getting surprise checks in the mail, and some are worth up to $500.

It’s part of the new Pennsylvania Money Match program, which automatically returns unclaimed property to residents without the need for paperwork.

Why Are People Getting Checks?

The Pennsylvania Treasury holds $5 billion in unclaimed property. This money comes from things like:

  • Uncashed paychecks

  • Closed bank accounts

  • Insurance payouts

  • Rebates

  • Utility refunds

More than 1 in 10 Pennsylvanians has unclaimed property, and many don’t even know it.

How the Pennsylvania Money Match Works

Under this new program:

  1. The Treasury identifies residents who are owed money (up to $500)

  2. Residents receive a letter saying a check is coming

  3. About 30-40 days later, the check arrives in your mailbox
